Transformers: Rise of the Beasts star Anthony Ramos has revealed that he’s been told the upcoming sequel is close to the original 2007 film directed by Michael Bay. Based on the Hasbro toy line of the same name, Transformers has started a multi-film franchise that is preparing for the launch of its seventh installment. The upcoming entry is directed by Steven Caple Jr. and stars Ramos as Noah Diaz in a story heavily inspired by the Beast Wars storyline.
In a recent interview with Collider ahead of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ release date this summer, Ramos shares that, while he hasn’t seen the film himself, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura made a bold statement about the quality of the film. sequel. According to Benventura, the upcoming film is on the same level as Bay’s original film, which is still considered the best in the series today. Below is Ramos’ full statement:
“Lorenzo di Bonaventura, one of our lead producers on the film, said to me, ‘How do you feel about the film, man?’ I said ‘I don’t know, I haven’t seen it yet’. And he said… ‘He’s already approaching the first one’. I was blown away! That movie introduced the series, so it almost feels like a setting for a new franchise. It feels like the start of a new thing, which is great. Steven Caple Jr., our director, is amazing. Dominique Fishback, Pete Davidson and the cast are insane. I’m just grateful to be there.”
Even though the visual effects have improved and the later films have introduced some interesting characters, such as Hailee Steinfeld’s Charlie in Bumblebee, the first Transformers remains the best film in the long series. Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky is a compelling hero, and his chemistry with co-star Megan Fox makes the pair easy to root for. The first Transformers is tasked with presenting this larger-than-life premise of Autobots versus Decepticons and is largely successful because audiences learn about these elements alongside two characters who are equally struggling.
Of course, one can’t talk about the first Transformers movie without mentioning the action. Though he’s far from a subtle director, Bay has an undeniable eye for big action scenes, which fits well with the whole premise of Transformers. The action scenes are further complimented by the fact that Transformers’ CGI, at the time, was stunning and for the most part still holds up today, nearly 16 years later.
Each subsequent Transformers film has had at least one or two outstanding sequences, but they have failed to reach the same level as the first due to complicated plots, unrealistic or uninteresting characters, and overall series fatigue. 2018’s Bumblebee is arguably the second best film after Bay’s original, starting from scratch to tell its unique story with a new director. If Ramos’ latest comments are any indication, let’s hope Transformers: Rise of the Beasts manages to be even better.
