Two brothers receiving intermediate treatment for meningitis at US institute

October 30 (Urgente.bo).- Gabriela Mamani, leader of the epidemiological research group of the La Paz Health Directorate (headquarters), reported that two children at the American Institute School in La Paz are receiving intermediate treatment for meningitis.

“Both minors are in the intensive care unit, they are currently receiving intermediate treatment, their condition is progressing well and we hope this continues so that they can be discharged,” Mamani said.

The case was reported last Saturday, but according to Mamani, the bacteria attacking the children “is not very contagious and the information has been distorted,” he said.

The two children, aged 8 and 6, were brothers and both suffered from chronic sinusitis, which required intensive care in hospital.

“This is due to poorly treated colds that are complicated by chronic sinusitis and possibly meningitis,” he explains.

The education unit’s management reported through a statement that due to a possible case of meningitis in the education unit, they have decided to suspend in-person classes to safeguard the health and well-being of students.

“The decision has been taken to suspend face-to-face classes, morning and afternoon shifts, individual and protocol classes at primary and secondary schools until further notice,” the statement said, adding that virtual classes would now be held.
