Scientists from the Oregon State University, in U.S, discovered that two components present in the cannabis could prevent infection by Covid-19. These are two acids known as CBGA Y CBDA, which bind protein S and prevent the virus from entering cells.
Under the name of “cannabinoids block the cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2 and emerging variants”, A team of scientists led by Richard van Breemen, a researcher at the Oregon State University (OSU) Center for Global Hemp Innovation, warned of a still unknown property in cannabis.

What the study says
The study, which was published in the Journal of Natural Products, assures that cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic (CBDA) bind to the spike protein (S or spike) to prevent the virus from entering the cell and causing infection.
“These cannabinoid acids are abundant in hemp (which is grown for industrial and non-medicinal production) and in many hemp extracts ”Van Breemen said in a statement issued by Oregon State University.
While emphasizing that these substances are not “controlled like THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and have a good safety profile in humans”. He also noted that these components were effective against the Alpha (British) and Beta (South African) variants.
The discovery of these two acids was made using a detection technique based on mass spectrometry, which had been developed by the laboratory led by van Breemen. “These compounds can be taken orally and have a long history of safe use in humans.”, Affirmed the scientist.
What are CBGA and CBDA acids in Cannabis
In van Breemen’s words, “the data show that CBDA and CBGA t“They have the potential to prevent and treat SARS-CoV-2 infection.”
- CBGA: protects the plant and collaborates in optimizing energy for its redirection towards the flowers. Towards the end of the plant’s growth, this substance, usually converted to THC or CBD, molecules used for their psychoactive and medicinal capacity.

- CBDA: this molecule is used to treat pain caused by various ailments, in addition to refractory epilepsy. It can be consumed in capsules, tinctures, topicals or homemade juices of raw cannabis.
