Uncharted 2 and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 They have nothing in common, or at least not intentionally on the part of director and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie. In short, the train scene parallels the adventures of Nathan Drake by pure coincidence.
We talked just yesterday about the suspicion that a particular sequence in the new movie with Tom Cruise borrowed the idea from the Naughty Dog video game, but apparently it was a coincidence. McQuarrie has really made it sound like he’s almost ignorant of video games and doesn’t know what Uncharted 2 is.
During an interview on Threads, the director said:
not even close. To be honest, I know very little about video games, I don’t know Uncharted. I used the word Uncharted quite literally in a post years ago and I’ve been talking about it ever since. But the truth is that video games are something I know practically nothing about. The only tournament I played so far was the Unreal Tournament. The truth is, I’ve never made a film with fewer self-conscious quotes: I think pretty much everything you do nowadays will inevitably seem to be a reference to something else.
Even though this juxtaposition between the cinematographic and videogame worlds must have been curious and admirable for video game fans, we have to resign ourselves to the idea that the reference does not exist.
