Uzo Aduba (Painkiller) or Dominique Fishback (The Swarm) Could Score Historic Golden Globe Win – GoldDerby

In the 54 years since then Diahann Carroll (“Julia”) paved the way for herself by becoming the first black woman to win a Golden Globe in television. The list of Black small-screen actresses who have won favor with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been expanded to include 12 more names, including the 2023 Comedy and Comedy Actors of the Year. dramatic champions Fifth Brunson (Abbott Elementary) and Zendaya (“Euphoria”). While this list has long covered television movies and both ongoing genres of programming, no black woman has ever been awarded a Golden Globe for her role in a limited series. However, there’s a decent chance that this will change soon, given the potential for possible 2024 Best TV Movie/Actress in a Limited Series contenders to win. Uzo Aduba

Possible Golden Globe nominee Fishback plays Dre Green in Amazon Prime Video’s The Swarm, a mentally unstable young woman whose unhealthy obsession Beyoncépop star drives a wedge between her and her adopted sister Rhys (Chloe Bailey), whose sudden death causes Dre to go on a killing spree. While Netflix’s Painkiller, on the other hand, is based on a true story, Aduba’s character is a fictional composite character. The former Orange Is the New Black (2015-16) and In Treatment (2022) nominee’s fourth Golden Globe bid and potential first win will be for her role as Edie Flowers, the unflappable prosecutor seeking justice for American victims of the opioid epidemic. and their families, fighting against Purdue Pharma.

At this point in Golden Globes history, the only two Black women to earn recognition for their leading roles in limited series are Regina King (“Seven Seconds”, 2019) and Cynthia Erivo (“Genius: Aretha,” 2022). They are the latest additions to a list of Black nominees for Best TV Movie/Actress in a Limited Series that also includes TV movie stars. Diana Ross (“Out of the Darkness”, 1995), Alfre Woodard (“Miss Evers’ Boys”, 1997; “Holiday Heart”, 2001), Halle Berry (“Meet Dorothy Dandridge,” 2000; “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” 2006), S. Epatha Merkerson (“Lackawanna Blues”, 2006), Queen Latifah (“Life Support”, 2008; “Bessie”, 2016) and Kerry Washington (“Confirmation”, 2017).

At 32, Fishback will replace Berry (who was about eight months older at the time of her first appearance) as the category’s youngest black nominee ever. She or Aduba (who is 10 years her senior) will become the fifth black recipient of the award, following Woodard (1998), Berry (2000), Merkerson (2006) and Latifah (2008). In general, the only black performers to receive Hollywood Foreign Press Association awards for their work on non-continuing programs are leading men. Ving Rhames

(“Don King: Only in America”, 1998) and Idris Elba (“Luther”, 2012) and supporting actors Louis Gossett Jr. (“The Josephine Baker Story”, 1992), Don Cheadle (“Rat Pack”, 1999), Jeffrey Wright (“Angels in America”, 2004) and John Boyega (“Small Axe,” 2021).

In addition to Carroll, Brunson and Zendaya, the list of black women who have won a major Golden Globe for a comedy or drama series consists of Gail Fisher (“Mannix”, 1973), Debbie Allen (“Hunger”, 1983), Regina Taylor (“I’ll Fly Away”, 1993), Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”, 2016), Tracee Ellis Ross (“Blackish”, 2017) and Michaela Hae Rodriguez (“Pose”, 2022). Fisher, who won the award for Best Television Supporting Actress for the same show in 1971, remains the only black champion in that category.

Aduba and Fishback currently hold the fifth and sixth spots in Gold Derby’s Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress predictions, with respective 51% and 41% support from hundreds of users who have chosen them. They are ahead of them in the race by other miniseries stars and potential newcomers to the category. Ali Wong (first place, “Beef”), Nice Pauli (second, “Little Fire”) and Rachel Weisz (fourth, “Death Calls”), as well as a possible returning contender Riley Keough (third, Daisy Jones and the Six; previously 2016’s The Girlfriend Experience).
