Vaccination is a fundamental pillar in preventing pneumonia

Marking World Pneumonia Day, health authorities are stressing the importance of immunization against this respiratory infection.

Pneumonia, an acute respiratory infection that affects the lungs and can cause complications, deserves special attention. world pneumonia day, celebrated every year on November 12th. In this context, health authorities emphasize the importance of vaccination as the main preventive measure.

Risky and vulnerable groups

This type of infection particularly affects people under 2 years old, adults over 65 years old, and people with chronic medical conditions. The disease causes painful breathing and limits oxygen absorption as the alveoli fill with pus and fluid.

Vaccines as a protective shield

Although pneumonia can pose a serious threat to life, the pneumococcal vaccine incorporated into national vaccination programs serves as an effective protective shield. This vaccine helps prevent certain types of pneumonia, whether caused by pneumococcal or influenza viruses, thereby reducing disease-related morbidity, complications, sequelae, and mortality.

Priority groups in vaccination plans

The official vaccination program specifically targets the groups most at risk:

  • Seniors (65 years or older): It is recommended that 2 injections be given 12 months apart.
  • Children under 2 years old: One dose is given at 2 and 4 months, with a third booster dose given at 12 months.
  • People aged 5 to 64 years with chronic immunocompromised conditions: Two doses are given 8 months apart, with a booster dose given at age 5 years and, if the first dose was given before age 60 years, a second booster dose given at age 65 years.
  • People aged 5 to 64 years with non-immune chronic conditions: Two doses are given, 12 months apart, with a booster at age 65, at least 5 years after the last dose.

extra precautions

In addition to vaccination, other measures such as hand washing, smoking cessation, healthy eating and physical exercise can help reduce the risk of pneumonia transmission.

Permanent vaccination schedule

The Ministry of Health underlines its commitment to immunization, ensuring that out-of-school operations are carried out throughout the year to expand vaccination coverage and ensure adequate coverage, thus strengthening the prevention of pneumonia.
