Vaccine developed against multiple sclerosis-associated virus AlMomento.net

MADRID – Researchers at the QIMR Berghofer Institute for Medical Research (Australia) have developed a vaccine candidate that achieves potent and durable immune protection against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in preclinical models, an advance that could prevent occurrence of such diseases. Severe viral infections are known to be a major cause of several diseases, including multiple sclerosis and various cancers.

The first results were published in Nature Communications. EBV belongs to the herpes virus family and is carried by about 95% of the population, but most people are unaware that the virus lurks in their bodies. This infection usually occurs in early childhood and causes very mild symptoms.

However, for some people, Epstein-Barr virus can cause serious illness. Those who contract the virus during adolescence or young adulthood may develop infectious mononucleosis or glandular fever, also known as the “kissing disease,” which is a major risk factor for several diseases and cancer.

Causes of Multiple Sclerosis

A landmark study published last year suggested that EBV may be a major cause of multiple sclerosis, an incurable neurological disease in which the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering around nerves , leading to debilitating symptoms.

Prevention of Epstein-Barr virus-associated infectious mononucleosis may prevent multiple sclerosis in the future, but despite global research efforts, no vaccine is currently available.

The new drug candidate offers an innovative approach that combines two powerful weapons of the immune system to attack viruses in acute and latent infections.
