Vaccine Journal Publishes Results of Cuba’s Soberana Vaccine in Children

Dagmar García, deputy director of research and development at the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV), wrote on the social network Facebook that this is the first report to describe in depth the cellular response induced by a protein vaccine in infants under 12 years old .

The Cuban Soberana vaccine induces coordinated humoral and cellular memory responses to Covid-19 in the pediatric population, researchers say.

The above-mentioned peer-reviewed scientific publications highlight that this response is qualitatively superior to that produced by natural infection.

He added that this is an excellent alternative for vaccinating children against Covid-19.

Between 2020 and 2023, more than 25 scientific publications were published related to the clinical development of the Soberana vaccine designed and prepared by experts in Caribbean countries.

Recently, IFV announced the initiation of a clinical study of its vaccine candidate, Quimi-Vio, for the prevention of pneumonia, meningitis, otitis media, and sepsis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, or pneumococcal bacteria, in a pediatric population with chronic medical conditions.

This heptavalent conjugate vaccine protects against the most prevalent bacterial serotypes in the world.

IFV clinical trials director Dr. Meybi Rodríguez told Cuban media that Quimi-Vio has undergone all stages of clinical evaluation and proven that it is safe and effective in preventing pneumococcal disease.

He noted that the product was developed by the same researchers as the immunogens Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus.

Pneumococcal disease particularly affects children under the age of five.

According to the World Health Organization, pneumonia is the single largest cause of death among children in the world.
