As expected in recent days, Vanoli Basket Cremona has signed a contract for the 2023-2024 season with American player Marcus Zegarowski, who will replace Jordan Bone, who returned to America for personal reasons. “I am very happy to have the opportunity to play in Italy for a great team. This will be a lot of fun. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Italian Serie A and how competitive it is. I can’t wait to get there and play with a fantastic group of guys,” the winger said after signing. That season in Cremona, wearing Vanoli’s jersey, would be his first season outside the United States.
He was born in Hamilton, Massachusetts on August 3, 1998, is 187 cm tall and plays point guard. The player belongs to a family of basketball players: his older brother is actually Michael Carter-Williams, currently playing for the Orlando Magic. and named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2014. His twin brother Max and sister Macy also play basketball, and both of his parents played at the collegiate level, while his mother Amanda was also a basketball coach.
After graduating from high school, he spent time with his twin brother Max between Hamilton-Wenham Regional School and Tilton School in New Hampshire, where as a senior he was named NEPSAC AA (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) Player of the Year and where he scored 57 points in win over South Kent High, moved to Omaha, Nebraska to attend Creighton University. He played three seasons with the Bluejays.
In his first year, he scored 10.4 points, dished out 3.4 assists and grabbed 3.2 rebounds per game, earning him a nomination to the Big East All-Freshman Team. In his second year, his averages increased to 16.1 points, 3.8 assists and 5 rebounds per game. In his third year on varsity, his 15.8 points, 4.3 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals, along with 80 threes on the season, a Big East first, helped the Bluejays reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. At the end of the year, Marcus declared for the 2021 NBA Draft, where he was selected in the second round with the 49th overall pick by the Brooklyn Nets.
He spent the 2021-2022 season in the G League with the Long Island Nets, posting 11.6 points, 3 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 21 games played. He was still playing in the G League last year. Starting with the Long Island Nets and after a brief stint with the Windy City Bulls, he played 26 games for the Austin Spurs, averaging 8.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists. 40.2% with two and 38.2% with three.
