Venice 80: Expectations are rising for the Venice Film Festival 2023, one of the most important film events internationally. This annual event is a showcase for the best new cinema from around the world. The Venice Film Festival 2023 promises to be exceptional, with a rich program of competitive films, distinguished guests and a series of accompanying events.
The 80th Venice International Film Festival, organized by the Venice Biennale and directed by Alberto Barbera, will take place at the Venice Lido from 30 August to 9 September 2023.
The godfather of the Venice Film Festival 2023 will be the charming actress Caterina Murino, known to the general public for her role as a Bond girl in Casino Royale in 2006. Katerina Murino will lead the opening and closing evenings of the Exhibition from the stage. Hall of the Grande Palazzo del Cinema on the Venetian Lido. The opening ceremony will take place on August 30, 2023, and the winners of the Golden Lion and all other prizes of the Venice Film Festival 2023 will be announced at the closing ceremony on September 9.
The opening film of the Venice Film Festival 2023 will no longer be Challengers by Luca Guadagnino, but Comandante by Italian director Edoardo De Angelis. This change was necessary due to the notorious U.S. actors’ and writers’ strike that halted production of the Challengers. Comandante, starring Pierfrancesco Favino, will open the edition of the 80th Venice Film Festival on August 30, 2023 in the Great Hall of the Palazzo del Cinema on the Venice Lido. The film tells the story of Salvatore Todaro, a submarine commander during World War II, and his heroic deed, which will serve to rescue the shipwrecked Belgians in the middle of the ocean.
The film that will close the 80th Venice Film Festival will be JA Bayona’s La Sociedad de la Nieve, which will have its world premiere on September 9, 2023 in the Great Hall of the Palazzo del Cinema on the Venice Lido. The film follows the survivors of a plane crash in the Andes in 1972 and their extreme measures to stay alive. This thriller will be distributed by Netflix and promises to keep viewers on their toes.
The 2023 Venice Film Festival will host a number of honored guests, including director Liliana Cavani and actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai, who have been awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. International stars such as Michael Fassbender, Adam Driver, Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Jessica Chastain, Bradley Cooper and Tilda Swinton (Hollywood strike permitting) will also walk the red carpet, as well as Italian talent such as Pietro Castellitto, Benedetta Porcaroli , Pierfrancesco Favino, Toni Servillo and Valerio Mastandrea.
The Venice Film Festival 2023 is not without its challenges. The American Actors Union strike caused uncertainty in the program, led to a change in the opening film, and caused several defections among the “stars”. “Comandante” Edoardo de Angelis will replace “Challengers” Luca Guadagnino after Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer joins the strike. However, fans’ enthusiasm will not be overshadowed by these challenges. Movie buffs from all over the world will flock to the Lido in Venice to see their favorite stars live, hoping to get an autograph or a selfie.
As always, Italian cinema will be strongly represented in this edition of the Festival. Talented Italian directors such as Stefano Sollima, Edoardo De Angelis, Pietro Castellitto, Saverio Costanzo, Matteo Garrone and Giorgio Rights will compete for the Golden Lion with their works.
