The last few years have seen accelerated growth for the gaming industry, which saw its audiences expand significantly. This trend naturally impacted conversations on social networks and the data from 2021 reaffirm that the expansion was not only a phenomenon of the first year of the pandemic. According to the figures revealed by Twitter, last year more than 2.4 billion tweets about videogames were generated.

In this way, the industry set a new record in the social network and established a growth of 14% compared to the previous year in the amount of content that users generated on the different topics associated with the industry. These numbers seem more impressive when compared to other nearby years: they represented an increase of more than 10 times compared to 2017. As an extra piece of information, and following the report published by the platform, “The fourth quarter of 2021 was the largest video game conversation ever on Twitter.”

Four situations that contributed to this growth stood out: the return of many face-to-face esports events after the mandatory break in 2020, the launch of new relevant titles, the expansion of coverage on these issues in the media and the trend that is beginning to excel in respect of NFTs.

In the first place, the most mentioned video games of 2021 stood out and the list was topped Genshin Impact, one of the most popular titles and with a more loyal and active community in recent years. The top 10 were completed: Apex Legends, Ensemble Stars !, Final Fantasy, Fate / Grand Order, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Knives Out, Minecraft, Project Sekai and Fortnite.

Ibai was one of the figures who stomped on the review of Twitter. He was not only the gaming content creator that gained the most followers in the year. It was also the one that garnered the most video views and was the fourth gaming personality that received the most mentions across the entire social network.

2021 was a year of milestones for the Spanish streamer and that explains the numbers he achieved. He carried out an evening of boxing that surpassed a million and a half spectators simultaneously, acquired -together with Gerard Piqué– the broadcasting rights of the Copa América for Spain, was part of the presentation of Messi at PSG (and his farewell to Barcelona) and presented his own esports organization, KOI, also from the hand of Piqué. That was not all because on New Year’s Eve it broadcast the chimes and surpassed 800 thousand viewers simultaneously.
