Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell compares Justin Jefferson to Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant

The Minnesota Vikings offense has been having a tough time since Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in October. With the team’s backup quarterback struggling, head coach Kevin O’Connell continues to search for answers as the Vikings currently sit below .500 and fighting for a playoff spot.

Regardless, the 38-year-old coach still believes in his team’s abilities. O’Connell kept it simple when asked by Vikings radio announcer Paul Allen about how the Vikings’ offense is looking at replacing the team at quarterback right now. The former NFL player-turned-coach emphasized the team’s desire to continue building around wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

“We know how to play the game without taking our best players away,” O’Connell said, via X’s and O’s by Kevin O’Connell. “The analogy I give to the coaching staff is ‘Just because Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant gets double-teamed, it doesn’t mean John Paxson always shoots. What that means is sometimes we try to design a play to help Michael Jordan became Michael Jordan.” I think Justin Jefferson is an amazing player. “I think he’s as competitive as any player I’ve been around.”

Throughout the season, Jefferson totaled 823 yards, 51 catches and four touchdowns in just eight games. That’s why O’Connell will try to make the necessary adjustments and create a system that allows the former Offensive Player of the Year winner to thrive.

O’Connell addresses quarterback concerns

As for the Vikings’ quarterback situation, O’Connell talked about how he continues to work on making adjustments, improving consistency in the team’s execution and making sure the quarterback “gets the football.”

“It’s just those little chess pieces moves that change some trends… That’s where we need to equip our players – have a great plan and be ready to play chess quickly. But ultimately if the picture changes or the look is unknown, our rules What was it? What guidance did we receive that allowed us to execute in those moments?” O’Connell said.

“It’s just about where you are from an offensive system standpoint – your ability to overcome. I know we have some new guys coming in at some key positions, but I do think the foundation is there. It’s just about us now. Consistency of execution. Obviously, keeping a tight grip on the football,” he added.

It’s safe to say that Kevin O’Connell trusts his players and his game plan. However, the next two weeks will determine whether the Vikings can finish the season strong and somehow lock down a playoff spot.
