Voters must be crazy – Deakin

The title is a reference to a cute movie from the 80s. Voters seem to be going crazy these days.

Last week’s elections, held on opposite sides of the world, ended with surprising results for many people. Before we could get over the shock of the victory of one of the world’s most unusual politicians, Javier Miley, in Argentina, we received news that Wilders’ party had come first in the elections in the Netherlands. ‘Where the world is heading“The weight of the question left even the troubles of our country behind us for a time.

When economic relief cannot be provided…

If we sort out the selection, we can start by putting Argentina, which is not really on our radar, except for soccer and tango for its fans.

Argentina, which was among the most prosperous societies in the world until the Great Depression of 1929, fell behind in the development race in the twentieth century. Increasingly removed from global trade networks, the country has spent nearly a century oscillating between populism and austerity-based stabilization policy options. The Cold War between Peronism and its derivatives, the subject of films and musicals, on the one hand, and the struggle between the middle classes and conservative soldiers who were terrorized by these policies, on the other, caused Argentina to become one of the most turbulent countries of the period.

Just like us, Argentines, who have opened up to the world since the 1980s and accepted the liberal prescriptions of that period as a cure for their troubles, have found themselves in the middle of economic turmoil, just like us, after short-term respites. The year 2001 was a year of crisis in Argentina, as it was in our country. Turkey’s extreme poverty, with relatively low political tensions, has led to street demonstrations and looting on the other side of the world. In the past twenty years, austerity policies and the populist policies that have developed in response to them have become increasingly popular. It comes and goes

passed with. Complaining about reckless and unsustainable policies “Responsible Economists” Despite the huge support packages provided by the International Monetary Fund, it has been unable to find a solution to the problems. The country, where the middle class has weakened and poverty is widespread, has been excluded from financial markets with the threat of bankruptcy. With the policies implemented to save the situation, Argentina won the global inflation league championship and rose to the top of the misery index.

Under these circumstances, the anarcho-capitalist Maili won a massive victory over the centre-left candidate Massa, who was unable to provide the required economic relief.

Trump remains the voice of common sense

In reference to the high taxes and the heavy burden borne by the public due to the current difficulties, the new president has proposals for a radical solution. It is proposed to remove the Argentine peso from circulation, even close the central bank and use the US dollar.

At the moment, not many economists are convinced that this approach, which has been tried in smaller countries such as Ecuador, represents a suitable solution for Argentina. However, Miley believes he will do so within a two-year transition period. His presentation, with a saw in hand, indicates the cuts he intends to make in public expenditures. Thus, it aims to reduce the tax burden and provide economic relief. His demonstration, in which he showed that he would reduce the number of ministries, indicates a similar policy.

Although some of Miley’s performances seem fun and childish, she also has a side that can get scary at times. While discussing Argentina’s problems, he talks about all the evils.LeaveHolding him responsible is an example. He says this, and it is interesting to think that he defines the political movement opposing him not as a competitor, but as an enemy with whom it is impossible to negotiate. Clearly, the demonization of certain groups, as we have become accustomed to in our political culture, represents a problematic approach. Moreover, Miley is doing this for a deep-rooted political tradition that covers half the political spectrum. He accepts his position as the indisputable truth and curses the audience before him. Although we are no strangers to the main topic, the tone used by Miley points to a bottom beyond the hole into which politics in Turkey has fallen.

We will see to what extent the new president can fulfill what he promised before the elections. At the moment, the markets do not seem to have received this extreme approach too coldly. There seems to be a belief that the high-pitched words spoken in the political arena will be implemented with greater restraint when it comes to implementation. After all, they may have an optimistic approach to how bad it can get for the country, which has been struggling in the hole it has been in for decades.

In foreign policy, the rapprochement between Miley and former Brazilian leader Bolsonaro, who narrowly lost the election last year, does not go unnoticed. It is clear that these two extraordinary politicians want to work together when Lula’s new term ends. Not only their hostility to left-wing politics, but also their irreverent ways make these two a good tandem in their own way, but Miley certainly wins the race to insanity.

It is known that Miley will support Trump in the US elections in November 2024. Even Trump, who once made us rub our eyes while listening, remains a voice of common sense after his victory over Miley. Frankly, I expect that the next elections will end with a result that satisfies Miley. Thus, we will see the power of a new type of entertainment politician from one end of the American continent to the other.

It’s not like you can joke about it

Although the second election this week ended with a remarkable result, it is not a joke like the first. Wilders and his party, which has long been prominent for its xenophobic, especially Islamophobic, views, won the elections in the Netherlands with a clear victory. It is not yet clear whether they will be able to form a government, but it is a worrying development because it shows that Europe’s rising far right has crossed a new threshold. Wilders, who has no sympathy at all for Turkey, leaves the polls with a landslide victory, despite fake news saying that the Turkish candidate won even before the polls closed.

Compared with Miley’s crazy temperament, Wilders is more terrifying with his appearance and thoughts. Opposition voters in Turkey may feel relieved that Wilders is directly targeting Erdogan and his supporters, but this is the wrong approach. The rise of the far right in Europe will continue to cause headaches even if the government in Turkey changes. It is inconceivable that the process of convergence that the continent is witnessing will not affect our country, which is located directly next to it and has been largely integrated into it, and whose economic development has been largely linked to it. Many people no longer take the process of full EU membership seriously, but policies that require deeper integration, such as visa issues, labor mobility, and the shape of the customs union, can only be implemented by sensible interlocutors. Even if Wilders and others like him were not in power, the pressures that their presence would impose on current governments would not lead to good results.

Why do they win?

Finally, let’s say something about why these petty politicians are so popular with the public these days.

What Trump, Bolsonaro, Milley, Wilders and their Eastern European counterparts say could anger a lot of people. But these politicians are the result of the masses’ dissatisfaction with the current course of events and the inability of the political establishment to meet their expectations. This political trend, which sometimes appears as an endorsement of irrational words and positions, can be considered a general protest from the voters’ point of view. The fact that mainstream political movements are increasingly becoming part of the problem rather than part of the solution can lead to audiences drifting further to extremes in their preferences.

I do not believe that these choices, whether in the case of Argentina or the Netherlands, may yield good results for either their societies or their interlocutors. But in the end, the person who needs to learn from these choices is to work on improving themselves.responsible’ There are politicians and political parties who see this. ““Voters must be crazy.” Instead of saying, it should be the duty of the coming period to think about the issues that push them to these choices.
