Although they spend most of their time on the show sitting in their special chairs, watching other people sing and then commenting on it, Voice will never let you forget that all of his coaches are musical legends in their own right. They are here because they know first-hand what star power is and are willing to try to impart it to the artists they recruit to join their team. They also, fortunately for us, used that star power from time to time.
Most of the time when the coach sings Voice, is a rehearsed, pre-planned performance, such as when all four coaches teamed up to sing “Take It Easy.” But sometimes the moment just presents itself and the coach spontaneously breaks into song, as John Legend did after winning another key vocalist for his team on Monday night.
Spontaneous piano performance by John Legend on Voice Season 24
At the beginning of Season 24, Episode 5, the coaches saw a performance from Lila Ford, who wowed them all and received a four-chair turn for her cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home.” It was clear that every coach wanted Ford on their team, but ultimately Legend won, and after Ford left the stage, he celebrated by walking over to Ford’s keyboard, which Ford still hadn’t put away. Sinking down onto the bench behind the keys, Legend did what any musical icon would do and began playing, treating the crowd and his fellow coaches to a version of his holiday song, “Welcome to Team Legend.” Sure, it’s a way to gloat, but if you’re going to gloat on national television, it helps to have that beautiful voice.
And of course, this isn’t the only time “Legend” starts singing in Season 24. A couple of weeks ago, in an effort to win over vocalist Mara Justine, Legend launched into a duet with the artist on his hit “All of Me” and eventually convinced her to join his team instead of Niall Horan. Again, a bold tactic, but when you sound like John Legend, people tend to let you sing whenever you want.
