Brazil and Real Madrid forward Rodrigo Gos received racist messages on his social media account following a heated altercation with Argentina captain Lionel Messi during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers between the two sides.

The game was delayed for 30 minutes due to clashes between local police and Argentinian fans, and Rodrygo got into a heated argument with Messi and midfielder Rodrigo De Paul after the game started.

“Racists are always on duty. My social networks are invaded by insults and all kinds of nonsense,” Rodrigo posted on his social media account.

“If we don’t do what they want, if we don’t behave how they think we should do, if we wear clothes that annoy them, if we don’t look down when they attack us, if we take up space that they think is It’s their own business and racists will carry out their crimes,” he added.

“They’re out of luck. “We’re not going to stop. “

The incident highlights a troubling trend, as it is not the first time Brazilian football players have been subjected to racial abuse. Rodrygo’s team-mate Vinicius Junior has also faced serious racial abuse in Spain over the past two years.

Vinicius’ case led to the arrest, punishment and execution of several individuals who were subsequently banned from stadiums by the Spanish government for many years. His resilience has been met with widespread support across the globe, with FIFA awarding him the Socrates Award for his contribution off the pitch in recognition of his efforts in anti-racism.

The rivalry between Brazil and Argentina is known as one of the fiercest rivalries in South America and the world. This intensity extends beyond the players themselves to the passionate fans who are willing to go to any lengths to support their team.

In the recent 2026 World Cup qualifying match, which Argentina won 1-0, the competition between the two sides resulted in a total of 42 fouls, including 26 for Brazil and 16 for Argentina. A total of four cards were shown, giving us a glimpse into the intensity of this enduring football rivalry.
