The heavy rainfall characteristic of this season has resulted in an increased frequency of certain diseases. After Tropical Storm Franklin, we must remain vigilant and strengthen our preparedness. Also, it’s important to know how to recognize some warning signs and seek necessary medical attention.
Dengue, Chikungunya, and other mosquito diseases
The risk of some mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, Zika and malaria increases during the rainy season because standing water is a perfect breeding ground for disease-transmitting mosquitoes. Some preventative measures you can take include using insect repellent, checking the area and treating uncovered standing water, and eliminating uncovered containers where rainwater may collect.
Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis is a disease caused by bacteria that is usually found in the urine and feces of infected animals, especially mice. Flooding can displace contaminated remains until they come into contact with human skin, wounds or mucous membranes, leading to infection. If possible, avoid exposure to potentially infectious water, such as floodwaters.
Hepatitis A, typhoid, cholera and other ingestion diseases
Hepatitis A, typhoid or salmonellosis, cholera and toxoplasmosis are just some of the diseases spread through contaminated water and food, and their numbers increase after rain. This is largely due to interruptions in the supply of safe drinking water sources for human consumption. The risk of infection increases when other water sources are used for ingesting, cleaning and washing food.

Some concrete steps you can take this season include removing standing water as soon as possible, clearing gutters to prevent standing water, and removing, covering, or turning over containers that may collect rain. It is also important to avoid touching or using water that may be contaminated in the soil. Try to provide yourself with safe drinking water to use and drink, and make sure to wash fruits and vegetables well before eating them.
Seek medical attention if you develop a high fever, are severely unwell, or have persistent diarrhea or vomiting, as these illnesses may require medical support to avoid complications.
