His career began in the 1950s, working with the Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga; he later collaborated in Paris with Lanvin designer Antonio del Castillo. He rose to fame in the 1960s designing clothes for former US first lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Penélope Cruz, Amy Adams and Sarah Jessica Parker, have worn their gowns on the red carpet at major events like the Oscars. Throughout her career, she received numerous awards, including the 1973 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Award for her entire career.
