1928. Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh. His real name is Andrew Warhola, and his parents are Slovak. He was a key figure in the Pop Art movement, whose works include the Campbell soup can series. He survived being shot in 1968 by activist Valerie Solanas.
1937. Baden Powell de Aquino was born in Varre-e-Sai, Rio de Janeiro state. He is one of the greatest bossa nova guitarists and has left a huge record. In 2000, a bout of pneumonia ended his life at the age of 63.
(In 1945, a U.S. Air Force B-29 Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. At 8:15 a.m., the first nuclear attack in history occurred. Co-pilot Robert Lewis saw mushrooms emerging from the city and exclaimed “God What, what did we do?”
1950 – Argentine journalist Joaquin Morales Sola was born.
1965 – The Beatles release their hit single “Help!”
1967 – Under the technical guidance of Osvaldo Zuberdia, the La Plata University team defeated Athletic Club 3-0 in the final of the 1967 Metropolitan Football Game and became one of the “Big Five” of Argentine football. The first club to win the first division championship. “pincharrata” thus won the race, which earned him his first Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup.
1970 – Indian film producer M. Night Shyamalan was born.
2009 – American film producer John Hughes dies.
2013 – A gas leak exploded in a building in Rosario, killing 21 people and injuring 62, making it the city’s biggest tragedy.
