U.S. health authorities have issued an alert due to an increase in infections caused by norovirus, known as stomach flu.
Cases have increased across the country over the last month, particularly in the Northeast and West, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Norovirus peaked in early March last year, possibly signaling that a final wave was coming, then quickly receded into the spring.
This is a seasonal virus: cases occur most often in the colder months (late fall, winter, and early spring).
Since early January, the norovirus positivity rate nationwide has been between 10% and 12.5%. By comparison, peak interest rates were as high as 16% in mid-March last year.
Anyone can get norovirus and get sick. The main symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, fever, headache and body aches, according to the CDC.
Norovirus can cause inflammation of the stomach or intestines, called acute gastroenteritis.
What are the forms of infection?
People usually develop symptoms within 12 to 48 hours after being exposed to norovirus, and most get better within 1 to 3 days.
If you are infected with norovirus, you may feel very sick and have vomiting or diarrhea multiple times a day. This can lead to dehydration, especially in young children, older adults, and people with other medical conditions.
