Sweden is the country most affected by the epidemic. Between November 2023 and February 2024, 39 cases of Psittacosis were reported in the country, representing an unusual increase in Psittacosis cases. Although some affected people claim to have been infected by poultry, most confirm exposure to small bird droppings.

Most people do not report direct contact with wild birds, although there are reports of contact with the excreta of these species or exposure to poultry.

Pneumonia begins with systemic symptoms: high body temperature, headache, general weakness, fatigue, and tiredness. After 24-48 hours, a cough begins, with a small amount of sputum, which is usually mucus-like and sticky. Jaundice (yellowing of the skin), splenomegaly (enlargement of the spleen), and changes in perception may also occur.

Affected persons must receive Antibiotics for 14 days. The patient’s contacts (family members or co-workers) must be monitored to identify early onset of symptoms.
