When Kobe Bryant was told he was absent on purpose so his idol Michael Jordan could win his final NBA All-Star Game

In the final game of the 2003 All-Star Game, Michael Jordan hit a dramatic fadeaway jumper with 3 seconds left in overtime to give the Eastern Conference a two-point lead.

If he wins, it will be the perfect capstone to a remarkable career also known as “His Air.” Kobe Bryant, however, had different plans.

Vince Carter understood that the 2003 All-Star Game was more than just a regular game between East and West; it was Michael Jordan’s All-Star Game.

Carter volunteered to give up his starting job for Jordan, which was a merciful move.

Carter believes the ideal farewell would be a victory for Jordan. He admitted that he gave it his all during the game, especially after Jordan’s fadeaway jumper in overtime. But he couldn’t ignore the outstanding presence of Kobe Bryant.

“We tried our best,” Carter shared, adding, “We yelled ‘End the game. End the game now.'” But as a competitor of Kobe Bryant, he was determined to win. “

Kobe’s competitive spirit in MJ’s farewell matchup

After Jordan hit an impressive fadeaway shot over Shawn Marion, the West called a timeout to plan their next move.

Kobe Bryant accomplished this plan by taking care of the ball, attempting three-pointers, and drawing fouls from Jermaine O’Neal.

As West starting guard Steve Francis later revealed, East head coach Isiah Thomas directed him to intentionally propose Bryant’s absence.

Kobe’s first shot was successful. Before he took up his second job, however, Francis conveyed Thomas’ recommendation to him.

Although Kobe missed his second shot, he hit his third to tie the game and send the game into the second round of overtime.

In the ensuing overtime, the West took the lead on baskets by Kevin Garnett and Steve Francis.

As the East began to decline, Bryant’s 3-pointers added to their success. This resulted in the West winning the game and Garnett winning the All-Star Game MVP title.

Kobe’s outstanding performance showed why he was often ranked alongside Jordan in terms of mentality and game skills.

While Bryant respects and acknowledges that this is his idol’s final All-Star game, he firmly believes that no one deserves a free ride. If Jordan wanted to win, he had to fight for it.
