When Michael B. Jordan stepped into the directing world – The Hollywood Reporter

I joined Outlier Society as president and became Michael B. Jordan’s producing partner after serving as president of production at Paramount Pictures. During pre-production, we stress-tested the concept and paradigm of the film.Michael and I kept asking ourselves, “What kind of movie are we going to make?” Yes, we’re making one creed Movie. Yes, we are working on a sequel. Yes, we are making a boxing movie. But the film also had to be a thriller, and it had to feature Adonis Creed reflecting on his past.It all has to look and feel like everything we know and love creed franchise, but it also has to feel like a new and different experience.

We wrote down every movie reference and movie that we thought was relevant to what we wanted Creed III. We watched all the references again and again, debated them, and honed the tone and visual language of the story and Michael’s vision. When we start building teams and creative teams around us, we always come back to the reference list. Michael never forgot what he was doing. He knew exactly what he wanted, and he articulated that vision clearly through the hours, days, and weeks he spent with department heads.

We have two main influences on the central story and one main influence on the action. The former is taken from the great American noir thrillers – almost all of them by Robert Mitchum: Get out of the past, cape fern and night of the hunter These remain on the whiteboard throughout the conversation.Another category of major influences are the first-rate family dramas, among which Robert Redford’s best films ordinary people at the top of that list. What Redford does in that film (his directorial debut, by the way!) is show a family unable to discuss their trauma, struggling to communicate and move beyond the pain. We feel like this has something to do with what Adonis and Bianca Creed (the amazing Tessa Thompson) are going through.

Additionally, the attention paid to the unique nature of each frame of each battle really enhances the viewing experience. The visual language of the boxing scenes was heavily influenced by Michael’s love of anime.

In order to make a film for theatrical audiences, we knew we needed to create a way to watch the film only on the big screen. We met with friends at Imax and asked them if they would be interested in making a sports movie. The good news is – they said yes! We had the privilege of filming the first notable sports film to be shot in the Imax format. The moment we made that choice, Michael and the department heads were able to design the ring and the match with the largest possible canvas.

So, what do I worry about every day? Simple answer: time. I know every producer worries about time, but the fact that Michael was pulling triple duty directing, producing, and acting made time management even more important. He has worked on many major action franchises over the years (Editor’s note: At Paramount Pictures, Raposo oversaw several films) Mission impossible Movie, Top Gun Maverick Produced by JJ Abrams Star Trek film), I knew we had to create space and time for Michael to be ready as a performer for all aspects of the shoot day, but he also needed to be present with the actors and department heads. Oh, and there’s one little problem, Michael has to stay in heavyweight championship shape while also training with the other fighters in the movie.

I’m proud of the work we did, but to this day I’m not quite sure how Michael fit into it all. I think I found a way to stop time and let it expand.

Michael also had a vision that was both grandiose when the film called for it and intimate when the film called for it. Sometimes I know my job is to get out of the way and just watch.

At night, there’s a scene between Adonis and his daughter Amara (Mira Davis-Kent) at the Delphi gymnasium, where Adonis teaches Amara how to hit a heavy sandbag. Michael did a scene with Mila where she blew her bangs away from her eyes so she could see the bag and land the perfect punch. As I looked at the monitor, I thought Mila was frustrated with her hair and wanted it out of her eyes. It’s so captivating and so real. As we were editing and the crew was making adjustments, I mentioned to Michael that the hair movement was really cute. Michael told me that he came up with this photo while preparing for the shoot that day, so it was a directive he gave her. For me, this moment frames the scene—it reminds me that in movies, it’s always the little details that inspire.

make Creed III It’s fun, it’s tough, and it’s inspiring. When we were shooting fight scenes, I would often perch under the ring between takes so I could talk to Michael immediately when the commercial yelled “cut” (didn’t want to waste him while I was running back and forth from Video Village any time). I remember thinking then, as I do now, that even though I was crouched under the ring with a mat on my head, I couldn’t imagine doing any other job in the world.
