Who is Khaled Mashal?

He was born in a village north of Ramallah in the West Bank. He immigrated to Kuwait with his family during the Six-Day War in 1967.

During his student years, he opposed the supremacy of Yasser Arafat and the Palestine Liberation Organization in the Palestinian cause. To this end, he founded the Islamic Rights Bloc, which competes with Fatah for the leadership of the student group called the Palestinian Students Union. After establishing Hamas in 1987, he served as the organization’s representative in Kuwait.

He moved to Jordan in 1991. In September 1997, he was subjected to an assassination attempt and an attempt to poison him. After Jordan expelled the Hamas leadership from the country in 1999, it moved to the Syrian capital, Damascus.
