The World Health Organization has warned that if current infection trends continue globally, viral hepatitis could kill more people than malaria, tuberculosis and HIV combined by 2040; And killed a million people. Of the five hepatitis types present, hepatitis B and C are responsible for most disease and death, as only 10% of those infected are diagnosed with chronic hepatitis B, and only 2% of these receive adequate life-saving treatment ; while hepatitis C is curable, only 21% of those infected are diagnosed and 13% receive treatment. Given the persistence of hepatitis B infection, the World Health Organization recommends hepatitis screening and treatment when one of these infections is diagnosed, in addition to hepatitis B vaccination and maintenance of a healthy weight, diabetes and high blood pressure.
