He grew up in Atlanta and Akron, Ohio, in the same neighborhood as James. He also played basketball and football at St. Vincent-St. Marie High School. When Carter was a senior and LeBron was a freshman, Carter and James led their basketball teams to undefeated seasons. Carter received a scholarship to play basketball at Western Michigan but ultimately transferred to the University of Akron.

Carter and James have been involved in numerous business investments together through LRMR Ventures, James’ family office. LRMR has invested in companies such as Major League Baseball Pickleball, Canyon Bikes and Blaze Pizza.
Notably, Carter helped broker a deal between LRMR and Fenway Sports Group in 2011 that gave him and James a minority stake in Premier League football club Liverpool. Over the past decade, the 1% share has increased significantly, reaching an estimated $7 million.
In 2021, James and Carter swapped their shares in Liverpool to become part of parent company Fenway Sports Group, whose subsidiaries include the Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Red Sox and TGL Boston. The move is part of private equity firm RedBird Capital Partners’ acquisition of more than 10% of FSG for more than $750 million. Later that year, Carter and James sold a majority minority stake to Hollywood studio RedBird Capital, which valued the company at $725 million.
