WHO statement on respiratory disease outbreak among children in northern China

The WHO has formally requested China to provide detailed information on an increase in respiratory disease cases and clusters of childhood pneumonia.

China’s National Health Commission reported at a press conference on November 13, 2023 that the incidence of respiratory diseases in the country has increased, which they attributed to the lifting of restrictions imposed due to COVID-19 and the spread of pathogens. called influenza virus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae

(a common bacteria that often infects young children), respiratory syncytial virus, and SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19. Authorities warned of the need to improve surveillance inside and outside health facilities and strengthen the health system’s ability to care for patients.

On November 21, the media and the ProMED system reported an outbreak of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China. It is unclear whether these cases are related to a general increase in respiratory infections previously reported by Chinese authorities or whether they are independent incidents.
