Justin Fields threw the football for the first time since dislocating his thumb in Week 6 against the Vikings and practiced on a limited basis Friday. He is officially doubtful for this Sunday’s game against the Saints, and Tyson Bargent is likely to start his third straight game.

This is undoubtedly the biggest news at Halas Hall on Friday, but there are other big developments that will impact the Bears’ performance when they head to the Superdome.

Middle linebacker Tremaine Edmonds is officially out after suffering a horrific knee injury last week. It looked like Edmunds might have suffered a serious injury at the time, but he seemed to have avoided a major issue.

“It’s week in and week out,” head coach Matt Eberflus said. “We’ll see what happens with this short week, though (due to next week’s Thursday Night Football game). “We’ll see how it goes, but definitely week in and week out, he’s improving every day. “

Jake Sanborn will take over at center back with Edmunds out.

Other players missing include Jaquan Brisker (concussion), Nate Davis (ankle) and Terell Smith (mononucleosis) . Blisk is the only player with a chance to return this week if he clears concussion protocol.

The Bears will have Eddie Jackson back this week. The free safety hasn’t played since injuring his foot in Week 2 but was available last week on an emergency basis. He will return to the starting lineup this week.

Finally, Braxton Jones is still within the 21-day practice window and returns from injured reserve. Jones also has not played since Week 2 due to a neck injury. The Bears still have a week and a half to move Jones to the active roster. If they don’t, they’ll have to shut him down for the rest of the year, but there’s no indication that’s a concern. Larry Borom played left tackle during this period.
