- People are fascinated by Taylor Swift’s every move, but some are especially drawn to her style.
- Psychologist Carolyn Mair said it’s because Swift is “the girl next door, but better.”
- The musician’s outfits are simple, versatile and easy to recreate, which leaves fans with no rest.
Charm surrounds everything Taylor Swift does: her massive tours, her relationships and, of course, her clothes.
But when it comes to the latter, fans aren’t tuning in because they’re expecting shocking fashion antics from stars like Doja Cat, Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian.
In contrast, Swift’s outfits are simple, understated and, in many cases, recognizable. Who hasn’t thrown an oversized T-shirt over their bike shorts and called it a day?
According to Carolyn Mair, a licensed psychologist, fashion business consultant and author of The Psychology of Fashion, it’s this attainability that draws the eye to every icon’s outfit.
“Taylor Swift’s style reflects her personal fashion choices rather than those that follow industry trends,” Mair said. “This authentic approach has made her a style icon and a very recognizable figure to fans, almost like the girl next door but better.”
Mair described Swift’s style as combining “classic elegance” but also a “modern, eclectic touch.”
“What sets her style apart from other celebrities is its amazing versatility,” she said. “Quickly and easily transition from vintage looks to modern, edgier ensembles, always maintaining an air of sophistication.”
In recent weeks, many of Swift’s street looks have included wardrobe staples like baseball caps, jeans and loafers.
However, she showed them off with unique jewelry, bold lipstick, and trendy designer bags.
While Mair noted that the intense media attention Swift receives creates additional buzz around what she wears, there is also a natural interest in celebrities who dress like us.
“A parasocial relationship is a one-way emotional connection with a media figure, celebrity, etc., resulting from regular consumption of media content featuring that person, resulting in a feeling of familiarity and connection with the celebrity,” Mair said.
“And Swift’s style suggests a form of parasocial interaction,” she added. “Many of her fashion choices can be easily imitated by her fans, which makes her even more attractive and attractive.”
Of course, you can’t talk about Swift’s fashion without mentioning her famous “eras.”
Whether it’s street style or performance fashion, Swift is known to regularly change up her look to suit both her latest work and her mood.
She wore dozens of sparkling minidresses after the release of Fearless, romantic summer dresses while promoting Speak Now, and during her Lover period.
Mair said Swift’s era would likely help the musician communicate “her emotional and creative journey” and also serve as a “style strategy.”
She said there was a connection between Swift’s “personal identity, artistic expression and fashion.” In this way, by changing her aesthetic with each era, Mayor says Swift can keep her image fresh and stay in touch with those who support her.
“From a psychological perspective, it fosters a sense of authenticity and intimacy as fans are able to watch her grow and transform through her fashion choices, creating an even deeper and stronger connection between Swift and her fans,” she said.
But in a broader sense, Swift’s eras and ever-changing fashion prove something more.
“It reinforces the idea that clothing is more than just a form of self-expression,” Mair said.
