Microsoft released the first preview build of Windows 11 earlier this week, and some testers have noticed that the OS can now provide estimates of how long it takes to install OS updates. Microsoft employees have since confirmed that the new feature is currently only available to a select few insiders, but it should definitely be a welcome addition if the estimates are accurate.
Ghacks noted that the system needs some work. Although Windows 11 indicated 5 minutes to install the update on one of the PCs, he noted that it took only about a minute and ten seconds to install the update and download it to the home screen.
Brandon Paddock, a chief software engineer on the Windows Cloud Services & Experiences team at Microsoft, also confirmed that the new feature is based on machine learning. Panos Panay recently announced that there will be 40% fewer updates to Windows 11, so the company’s algorithm may not be fully updated yet.
