Microsoft will finally stop pestering Windows 11 users to make Microsoft Edge their default browser.
The Redmond giant has begun testing this change on the latest test versions of the Windows 11 operating system, however it is limited to countries in the European Economic Area (EEA).
Microsoft ignored the choice of default browser for search in Windows 10 for a long time, and Windows 11 kept this practice, also ignoring the default browser settings chosen by the user.
Soon, users in EU countries will be able to use their default browser to open links without resorting to workarounds to circumvent Microsoft’s wishes.
Interestingly, Microsoft quietly announced its latest changes to Windows 11 just a few days before announcing that it would begin splitting Microsoft Teams from Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites in EU markets in October to avoid further antitrust scrutiny. after the European Commission opened a formal agreement. investigation in July.
It’s unclear if the default browser selection changes in Windows 11 are related to this EU investigation, or if Microsoft is facing further complaints from competitors.
edge asked Microsoft to comment on the changes and especially why they only apply to EU countries, but the company declined to comment.
