A strange but interesting strategy from John Thompson
Anyone who remembers Patrick Ewing from his days in the NBA with the New York Knicks knows he was a great player, but his Knicks teammate Charles Oakley says he’s never the same player he was at Georgetown Player, he was right.
At Georgetown, Ewing played with astonishing ferocity. He burst onto the scene as a rookie and, quite frankly, was terrifying to his opponents. In one game his freshman year, he demoralized OSU by blocking a shot on one end and beating the entire team on the other.
They gave up. Honestly, they just did it. He was just so intimidating.
In the national final against North Carolina, John Thompson wanted to highlight his threat and told him to give it his all in the early stages of the game. He doesn’t even care if it’s the goalkeeper: it’s just a shot in the air.
So he did it.
It worked to an extent, but there was only so much you could do to intimidate teams with Michael Jordan and James Worthy. Georgetown had a chance to win when De La Hoya Fred Brown inexplicably passed the ball to Worthy at the end of the game.
