So which films topped the festival list to add to your must-see list? Here are our top picks…
Saltburn
If you were a fan of Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Women, then the director’s sophomore feature is for you. This time, Emerald plunges into the world of high society following an Oxford student who is invited to spend the summer with his incredibly rich friend. However, not everything is as it seems in Felix’s stately home, and summer soon ends. Check out our full review here.
May/December
Oscar nominations are sure to be in store for Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in this creepy tale about a seriously taboo subject. In the film, Julianne plays Gracie, a woman who met her husband when he was 13 and she was in her 30s with a husband and children. Elizabeth (Portman) is set to play Gracie in a movie about the scandal and visits the family to find out more about them, leaving them to question how happy their family really is. We are all strangers
Andrew Scott is an impressive 40-year-old screenwriter who discovers that his parents, who died in a car accident when he was a child, are living in his old house, frozen in time at the age at which they died. At the same time, he meets and falls in love with a man living in his house (Paul Mescal). The incredible film touches on themes of loneliness, grief, nostalgia and sexuality, and we think it will be a big hit at the Academy Awards. Our review.
One life
Grab your tissues, because Anthony Hopkins’ role as real-life hero Nicholas Winton, who saved dozens of Jewish children during the Holocaust, is getting a biographical treatment. An extraordinary story that is definitely worth watching.
Poor things
Emma Stone is incredible as a woman resurrected from death and starting her childhood as an adult, leading to an absolutely crazy and wild performance from the La La Land actress. With a stellar cast including Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo, it’ll have everyone talking!
Priscilla
Jacob Elordi takes the white lights from Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in this Sofia Coppola film aimed at invading the life of Elvis’ wife Priscilla, whom she met when she was 14 and he was 24. Sharing early reactions to X, formerly known as Twitter, one person wrote: “Can’t stop thinking about Sofia Coppola’s #Priscilla. A beautifully shot, sensual portrait of the woman behind the headlines. She had an isolated life with a lonely, controlling love where Elvis made the rules. “Great scenery, soundtrack with the brilliant Cailee Spaeny.”
Killers of the Flower Moon
Will this highly anticipated Martin Scorsese film lead to another Oscar for Leonardo DiCaprio? The first reaction reads: Killers of the Flower Moon is one of Scorsese’s best films. DiCaprio delivers another stellar performance. Lily Gladstone is so fascinating to watch. But De Niro is amazing and this may be his best performance in years.” But what is it? The story tells the true story of how members of the Osage Native American Tribute were killed after oil was discovered on their land.
Cyclists
Sons of Anarchy meets the Swinging Sixties in this gritty drama with an Oscar-worthy cast. Following a Midwestern motorcycle club, The Bikeriders take on Katie (Jodie Comer) – the wife of mischievous Vandals member Benny (Austin Butler) – recalling the club’s meteoric rise to power and subsequent decline. As the stakes get higher and higher, Katie tries to recapture Benny from the Vandals, but notorious leader Johnny (Tom Hardy) has other plans.
