New fan art of Wonka brings out the playful side of young chocolatier Timothée Chalamet. Directed by Paddington director Paul King, the film serves as a prequel to 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, based on the childhood years of the inventor, magician and candy maker. The recent trailer for Wonka, which revealed Chalamet’s take on the iconic character, proved divisive, with everyone comparing him to Gene Wilder’s beloved portrayal and to a lesser extent Johnny Depp’s portrayal in the film Charlie and the 2005 Chocolate Factory.

The trailer for the Wonka movie was extremely divisive because it features a younger version of the character played by Chalamet who, as this new fan art reveals, is playful and eccentric. This contrasts with Wilder’s earlier version of Willy Wonka, which is also weird and eccentric, but has a touch of craziness that underlines the character’s mysterious qualities and keeps the audience aware of his true intentions. Chalamet’s Willy Wonka is also very different from Johnny Depp’s.
