Good news: Thor 5’s new villain will be stronger than Hela.

New details reveal that Thor 5, starring Chris Hemsworth, will feature a more powerful villain than Hela. Hemsworth’s latest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn’t perfect as fans feel that Thor: Love and Thunder wasted Gorr, played by Christian Bale, with constant switching between comedy when Thor was, and a darker story with Gorr and Jane Foster. plays Natalie Portman, which makes the film very uneven. Despite the divisive fourth Thor movie, the character’s story in the MCU is not over yet, and a possible Thor 5 has just revealed some new details.

In an upcoming Titan book titled Thor: Love and Thunder: The Official Special, due out September 19, 2023, Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi talks about the future of the Thor MCU and what it could bring along. Waititi says that Thor’s next adventure should include a story that “continues as the character develops” and offers him “obstacles that seem to be based on the challenges he faces.” One such obstacle in Thor 5’s story would be a stronger villain than Hela, as Waititi believes she should be “more formidable in a way”. Here is the full quote:

“What to do with him? It should be something that seems to continue as the character develops, but still in a very fun way, giving him the opportunity to deal with whatever obstacles he has to overcome. I don’t think we can have a weaker villain than Hela. I feel like we need to take it one step further and add a villain that is more formidable.”

While Thor 5 hasn’t been confirmed yet, Waititi already seems to have a lot of plans in place in case the movie moves forward. The director also revealed that there is one aspect that he feels is more true to Thor than other MCU characters, and that is “the mythology he comes from.” Waititi believes that juxtaposing Thor with “increasingly bizarre and insane beasts, monsters and aliens”, as he continues in the MCU, is in line with Thor in the comics and his mythological origins.

Staying true to both Thor’s origins and Waititi’s eccentric storytelling style, the director believes Thor is an MCU franchise that “succumbs to big, colorful, fictional alien creatures and things from different worlds.” Waititi believes that the exploratory aspect of Thor is important as the hero has traveled to many worlds due to his age. For this reason, Waititi thinks Thor is fighting wild villains in the MCU and a possible Thor 5 doesn’t hit him, saying “I don’t think he’s all that surprised when he sees these things.”

Lastly, Waititi believes that Thor’s unique quirks make him more exciting in space adventures than the human characters in the MCU, saying, “So he has a fun element to him and he has an ease and sort of self-confidence when he visits these worlds and encounters these aliens, which I don’t think would happen when an earthling travels through space exploring the universe.” According to Waititi, if the director gets a chance to make Thor 5, MCU fans can expect Thor to visit many different colorful worlds, fight wild villains, and face a more formidable enemy than Hela, making Thor 5 a very special film.
