In a few weeks, Italian cinemas will also start showing in theaters. Oppenheimer, director Christopher Nolan’s latest work, brings the famed physicist and his Manhattan Project experience to the big screen. In the role of the father of the atomic bomb, we see Cillian Murphy, who has already received many compliments for his acting. Along with him, numerous outstanding personalities appear in the cast, such as Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh and many others.
The director is best known for his ability to shoot crazy scenes as realistic and practical as possible. Of course, the director did not blow up any nuclear devices, which in any case would be forbidden to him, even if there was intent. But even with this latest project, Nolan once again made it his mission to bring back as realistic as possibleusing a lot of practical experience done by decorators.
Oppenheimer: work on the set and scenography
For OppenheimerChristopher Nolan chose the city Los Alamos in New Mexico as a filming location. Nothing surprising, given the fact that the real bomb was built there. However, the first problem arose when the director and his artistic director Ruth De Jong they realized that the city clearly no longer had the atmosphere of those years. In fact, De Jong stated:
“Christopher and the son went into the city and realized that it was too modern. There was a Starbucks on every corner. He told me that if I wanted to, I could test myself, but he wasn’t going to act there anymore.”
From that moment on, a new search for a location began. They ended up on Ghost Ranch, a twenty-one thousand acre site located in northern New Mexico. Initially, the idea of Ruth De Jong was to rebuild the city both outside and inside. Started from 3D model be able to figure out how to allow actors to seamlessly transition from interior to exterior. However, unfortunately, this project exceeded the budget allocated for the staging of the scenography.

Fortunately, Ruth was able to find a solution to the problem. She noticed that the interiors of buildings in the real Los Alamos were still preserved. ideal for the historical period of the film. So he decided to suggest to Nolan that he shoot most of the exteriors in the refurbishment at Ghost Ranch, and the interiors in authentic Los Alamos. This not only allowed cut costsbut it meant that in some scenes the actors could play something very real.
