In December 2022, Spanish fashion house Balenciaga became embroiled in controversy over two advertising campaigns: one with child model with teddy bear BDSMand another with a Supreme Court ruling on child pornography and a book about the Belgian artist Michael Borremans.

Since then, the fashion house has come under a lot of criticism. fans and celebrities accuse luxury brand of sexualizing children and even normalize child abuse.

Although many fashion commentators and celebrities called for a boycott of the brand, Kim Kardashian condemned the luxury brand in a social media post: writing that she was “appalled by the disturbing images” of the campaign as a “mother of four”.

In January, just a month after the scandal, it was reported that Kardashian was selling some of her personal Balenciaga items at a discounted price.

Defense of Balenciaga

In a recent interview, Balenciaga’s creative director: Demna Gvasaliaspoke publicly about the scandal for the first time.

He told Vogue Paris that widely condemned props, such as legal documents related to a child pornography case, as well as images of children holding a teddy bear that appeared to be in bondage clothing, were intended to refer to “punk and DIY culture”.

“There were review processes in place, people involved – internal and external – but we just hadn’t identified what was problematic,” he said.

“It was error of judgment. I’m very regret about it. We have now learned from this and greater and more thorough checks and checks will be applied before any images are published. That’s why I want to apologize; “I sincerely apologize for what happened and to everyone who was affected by it.”

At the time of the Balenciaga scandal “strongly condemned” child abuse and stated that the brand never intended to “include them in its storytelling.”
