Gwyneth Paltrow starred in a romantic comedy Little Hal and plays a very heavy role of a woman, a kind and beautiful person. Although the film dealt with themes of inner beauty and self-reflection and was very well received, Paltrow had a very difficult time on set.
Not only did she have to wear a very heavy fat suit and also apply heavy makeup that took two hours to put on, but the whole experience was incredibly isolating for her. In an interview with the LA Times, the actress spoke about a small experiment that the film crew conducted, sending her to a restaurant along with a very attractive assistant:
“Nobody even looked at me. If I walked past a table, you know how naturally you just look up. But people will see in their peripheral vision that I’m heavy and won’t look because I think they think it’s the polite thing to do. It was incredibly isolating, very lonely and sad.”
Although the role brought her generally positive reviews and widespread praise, she later told a magazine NetflixShe called it her biggest regret and complete failure.

Meanwhile, Brendan Fraser won an Oscar for a similar role.
Brendan Fraser WHALE based on the play of the same name, which portrays Fraser as an extremely obese English professor. The star wore a 300-pound fat suit to play his award-winning role as Charlie. Not only did he receive widespread acclaim for his important role, but he also won his first ever Academy Award.
Similar role to Gwyneth Paltrow’s Little Hal In terms of looks, Fraser was more than grateful and happy to be offered such an important role, as he tearfully exclaimed during his Oscar acceptance speech (via Variety). Not only did he win numerous other awards, including Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards, but he also received a 14-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival during the film’s world premiere.
