In light of the Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip, in a context of scarcity of food, water and fuel due to the siege imposed on the Strip, a video clip was circulated on social networking sites which according to the publishers was of “a Child Palestinian who eats grass to satisfy his hunger.”
The video shows a child sitting in what appears to be a field, eating grass, while the editors of that video commented saying: “Look at this Palestinian child eating the herbs of the earth out of hunger.”
The video has received tens of thousands of shares from social media pages since it began spreading on November 12, 2023.
Famine warning in the Gaza Strip
The diffusion of the video takes place in light of the “definitive siege” imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the war, where tens of thousands of people are without shelter, and there is a serious humanitarian crisis, a serious shortage of food supplies and a drinking water outage.
The World Food Program warned Thursday that residents face “the immediate possibility of starvation” in the Gaza Strip, where “food and water supplies have become virtually non-existent.”
The executive director of the World Food Programme, Cindy McCain, spoke in a statement about the “approaching winter,” noting that “shelters are unsafe and overcrowded and there is a shortage of clean water.”
“There is no way to meet current hunger needs through a single operational border crossing,” he said, referring to the limited aid that has entered through the Rafah crossing with Egypt.
