Dune: Sisterhood has received a promising update after months of struggle for the prequel show. Set 10,000 years before the events of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic films, Dune: The Sisterhood follows the first sect of the Bene Gesserit, formed by the Harkonnen Sisters. Recently, Dune: The Sisterhood has suffered several setbacks in recent months with the resignation of key people working on the project.
A new report from Deadline shares promising news about the cast of Dune: The Sisterhood. The Crown’s Olivia Williams will play the lead role of Tula Harkonnen, while The Witcher duo will play Natalya. The roles of Tula and Natalya were originally played by Shirley Henderson and Indira Varma, respectively, who stepped down from their roles earlier this year. Anna Foster also joined Dune: The Sisterhood to direct the season 1 premiere and other episodes.
After several behind-the-scenes issues on the show, Williams, May and Foster would join Dune: The Sisterhood. Last March, the project, originally intended for HBO Max before moving to the newly launched Max, suffered a major blow when director Johan Renck left the project despite being attached to direct the first two episodes. Co-creator Diane Ademu-John also stepped down as showrunner, leaving Alison Schapker as the sole showrunner of Dune: The Sisterhood.
Despite these setbacks, Dune: The Sisterhood’s cast changes and Foster’s entry as director is a good sign that the show is back on schedule. While it’s unclear when the Dune prequel show will release, the latest news at least indicates that progress is being made on the project that’s been in the works since the release of the first film. However, due to the ongoing writers’ strike and a possible upcoming SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike, the show’s future may face another hurdle.
With the release of Dune: Part Two in theaters on November 3rd this year, it’s possible that the film will give some indication of what to expect from Dune: The Sisterhood. But given that Max’s show takes place 10,000 years before Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides joins the Freemen, it seems equally possible that the long-awaited sequel won’t directly reference the prequel. Either way, it looks like Dune: The Sisterhood is back on track to expand the Dune franchise into the world of television.
