American actress Piper Laurie, known for her roles in the films “Hustler” and “Carrie,” has died at the age of 91, her manager said.
Marion Rosenberg told The Associated Press that the three-time Oscar nominee died at her home in Los Angeles.
She described the actress as “a superb talent and a wonderful person.”
Her talents were not limited to acting – Laurie took a 15-year break from acting to campaign for the civil rights movement.
Upon her return, she was nominated for an Oscar for the first film she starred in, Carrie.
Born as Rosetta Jacobs, she was born in Detroit, Michigan to parents of Russian and Polish descent.
She signed with Universal Studios at age 17, receiving a contract and a new name: Piper Laurie.
However, Laurie became disillusioned with the acting industry and the same roles she was being relegated to, and ended her Hollywood contract, moving to New York to pursue other roles.
She later left the profession during a 15-year hiatus and focused her attention on the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War.
During this time, she also married film critic Joe Morgenstern and gave birth to a daughter.
Laurie has also starred in numerous television shows, including Matlock, Murder, She Wrote, and played the mother of George Clooney’s character in ER.
