The 40-year-old’s clothing bore a statement of support for the recent uprising in Iran, which popularized the slogan Zan Zendegi Azadi (Women’s Freedom to Live).
Her T-shirt bore the name of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman who died in Iranian police custody last year after she was arrested and beaten for wearing tight trousers and wearing her hijab incorrectly.
The incident sparked a violent backlash against the morality police – the Gasht-e-Ershad (Guide Patrol) – and sparked months of civil unrest in Iran.
There was another brief surge of protests last month as regime critics marked the anniversary of Mahsa’s death.
Anne, who celebrated her 40th birthday last year, tucked her shirt into a black leather pencil skirt that evoked memories of the 1960s.
Three days earlier, Anne wore a sparkling pink dress to attend a screening of her upcoming film She Came to Me in New York.
Peter Dinklage stars as a composer suffering from writer’s block, Anne as his therapist-turned-wife, and Marisa Tomei as a tugboat captain who has a one-night stand with him, leading to a burst of creative inspiration.
She Came to Me was directed by Arthur Miller’s daughter Rebecca, whose filmography includes The Private Life of Pippa Lee.
Tuesday’s event comes amid a tumultuous SAG-AFTRA strike, during which union members are barred from attending premieres and screenings.
However, SAG-AFTRA reached a temporary agreement that allowed the cast of that particular film to attend this week’s screening, Variety reports.
One of the requirements of the interim agreement is that the film’s producer must operate separately from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
Anne’s latest appearance comes after she told Entertainment Tonight that she would “love” to work on another project with her Devil Wears Prada co-star Meryl Streep.
The hit comedy was adapted from a novel by Lauren Weisberger, who previously worked as an assistant to Anna Wintour at Vogue.
With Meryl as the icy fashion editor and Anne as her mousy gofer, the film’s untold inspiration was clear to all to see.
“Nuclear Wintour” cleverly assimilated the film’s publicity into her media image, to the point that she even attended the premiere at Prada.
Years later, she told CNN that her former assistant “brought attention to fashion in a way that, you know, you can look at it in both a negative and a positive way. I prefer to look at it positively. In a way, I think I should be grateful to her.”
