Long awaited and discussed Barbie hits theaters July 20. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as the famous doll and her partner Ken, are ready to accompany viewers into the “pink” world of Mattel products. The film, directed by Greta Gerwig, is the first film adaptation of the famous series of Barbie dolls. The story begins with Barbie being kicked out of Barbie Country for not being perfect, so the doll travels to the real world to find true happiness. But there are a lot of things to know about the film, from the production to the cast and makeup.

Who is Greta Gerwig

The film project, based on Mattel’s line of dolls, dates back to September 2009 when the company signed a contract with Universal Pictures. The idea never took off, and in April 2014, Sony Pictures entered the scene. Due to scripts rewritten by different hands and scheduling conflicts, in 2018 the film rights went to Warner Bros and the film began its real development. Greta Gerwig was signed on to direct the film in July 2021, and she’s no small director and writer. After the success of two important works such as Lady Bird AND Small womanscreenwriter Francis Ha directed by Noah Baumbach, her creative and life partner, Gerwig has already received three Oscar nominations (two for Lady Bird and one for Small woman) and the Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy for Lady Bird.

Nearly ran out of pink paint for the film’s scenography

Among the curiosities about the creation Barbie, there is a story about the pink paint used for the scenery. To reproduce the doll’s life-size world, so many hundredweights would have been used that the world’s reserves were almost completely exhausted.

The cast of the film

As already mentioned, projects regarding the Barbie movie have followed one another since 2009, as have the names of those who were supposed to interpret the iconic doll. In 2016, for example, Amy Schumer entered talks with Sony for the lead role and also rewrote part of the script written by Hillary Winston before leaving the production the following year. Even Anne Hathaway was interested in playing Barbie, but the project didn’t materialize. When the screen rights to the film were transferred to Warner Bros, Margot Robbie was contacted, who agreed to take part in the project for a cosmic amount, we are talking about $ 12 million. Ryan Gosling also joined the cast in 2021. In addition, Dua Lipa will make her debut as an actress in the film: the singer plays the role of Barbie the mermaid.

Trick to Make Margot Robbie the Perfect Barbie

Even if Margot Robbie already seems to have all the physical characteristics to interpret the famous doll, blond hair, blue eyes and a stately physique, the qualities given to her by mother nature were not enough. The actress had to go on a strict diet without sweets and carbohydrates. The volume of the hair was increased with the help of extensions and the color was lightened, and powders and highlighters were used to get Barbie’s flawless skin. Ryan Gosling also went on a diet to play Ken, and the make-up artists got to work on creating a “natural tan” effect.

barbie costumes

Costume designer Jacqueline Durran, known for her creations in vintage costumes, took care of the stage attire. In this case, however, the stylist opted for phosphorescent mini dresses, fuchsia jumpsuits, leggings and boots, all of which are Barbie-inspired and 80s-inspired. The film also recreates objects from the doll world, such as her villas, swimming pools, cars, and an amusement park.

Film controversy

Even before its release, many attacked the film, accusing it of glorifying the unreal and superficial world of Barbie. In fact, the director herself noted that the film is deeper than you think. Greta Gerwig has already demonstrated in previous works that she has a feminist style aimed at the emancipation of women, and it is likely that “her” Barbie is very different from the official representation.
