‘Beast of War’: Kia Roach-Turner to Direct World War II Thriller ‘Shark Shark’ – Deadline

Genre director Kia Roach-Turner has reunited with Cornerstone for his latest feature: Beast of Warwhich the company will present at the upcoming American Film Market.

Described as a “survival thriller,” the film follows a group of soldiers stranded on the open ocean as they face a harrowing battle for survival against their top predator, a great white shark.

Beast of War Produced by Bronte Pictures’ Blake Northfield (Streamline, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, Escape and Evasion) and “Pictures in Heaven” by Chris Brown (Sting, sunrises, Railway worker) and will begin production in 2024 in Australia and Malta. CreatureNFX Director Paul Trefry (Alien: Covenant, Unbreakable), will create practical creature effects in his studio in Australia. Trefry is well known for his work with directors such as James Cameron, Ridley Scott and Baz Luhrmann.

The full synopsis reads: 1942. A warship transports hundreds of Australian soldiers across the Timor Sea to the front lines of World War II. Suddenly, Japanese fighter planes screamed through the sky, and within minutes the ocean turned into an inferno of steel, fire, oil and blood. With the ship destroyed, a handful of soldiers build a makeshift raft from the floating debris, clinging to their lives. Tensions rise between the hot-tempered and frightened young people as they band together to survive. But their biggest battle is yet to come. In the darkness below, a great white shark hunts among the wreckage, drawn by the smell of fresh blood in the water.

“We enjoyed working with Kia on Sting. He is an energetic director with a deep respect for the genre, and we know he will create a special, adrenaline-fueled shark movie,” said Cornerstone’s Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder.

Roache-Turner began his career in the commercial world and released his debut film in 2015. Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, which debuted at Fantastic Fest in Austin. Its continuation Necrotonicstarring Monica Bellucci, which premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. Wyrmwood: Apocalypse won the Audience Award at the 2021 Sydney Film Festival.

Cornerstone is handling sales and distribution of Kia’s upcoming arachnophobic horror film worldwide. Sting which will be released by Studiocanal in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Switzerland and Benelux.
