Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos is directing and is backed in his new project by outstanding protagonist Emma Stone (who has already worked with Lanthimos in Darling), here also as a manufacturer.
Poor creatures! tells the incredible and fantastic story of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman who is brought back to life by a scientist in love with her, her husband: Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe).
Under Dr. Baxter’s protection, Bella is nonetheless elusive, being a teenager eager to learn and learn all about life, especially mundane life. In fact, wanting a taste of the worldly life she lacks, she will run away with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) on an exciting adventure across the continents.
Bella is a very interesting character because she is characterized by an innocence that only a little girl can have, an innocence that is contained in an adult body, which is therefore devoid of all those defects that characterize adults. Free from the prejudices of her time, this woman is a symbol of the struggle for equality and the emancipation of women, but of all people in general.
While the narrative elements make it a horror movie, it’s actually really a fairy tale with a beautiful happy ending, which makes it surprisingly positive.
