Billy Porter expressed outrage at Vogue 2020 cover by Harry Styles.
In an interview with The Telegraph, the 53-year-old American actor and singer explained that he said Styles got the magazine’s first male cover because he was “white and straight.” On the picture pop star wears a skirthinting that clothes have no gender and can be worn even by a man.
“It seems to me that this is not good. You use my community — or your people are using my community — to elevate you. You didn’t have to sacrifice anything,” he said.
Cover art and the degenderization of fashion
The Pose star added that before the cover was released, the editor-in-chief of the magazine, Anna Wintour, contacted him and asked for advice on how to run Vogue.
“In the end, this bitch said to me:“ How can we do better? I was so surprised that I didn’t say what I should have said,” she says today. Porter said he called Wintour
Porter says she encouraged Wintour to “use her power as (editor) of Vogue to draw attention to the voices of those who control fashion.” movement to degenderize fashion… Six months later, Harry Styles is the first person on the cover,” he says bitterly.
However, despite what Porter claims to be true, the former One Direction boy band singer has spent a lot of money in recent years. for the LGBTQ+ community and make the world of entertainment more inclusive.
For example, with her “gender-neutral” cosmetic line, offering products that can be used by everyone* outside of gender stereotypes. Or by inviting the boys and girls who attend his concerts to go out safely, feeling at ease* in their choice.
“I don’t have that with Harry Styles. it’s politics”
The Emmy, Tony and Grammy award winner has already expressed anger at the 2020 male fashion magazine cover, clarifying that it was not a personal attack on the artist.
“I don’t mention Stiles, but is he the one you want to use to represent this new vision? He doesn’t care, he just does it because it has to be done.”
“this is politics for me. This is my life. I had to fight all my life to get to the point where I could wear a dress to Oscar and not get shot. He just has to be white and straight“.
Just three years ago, Billy Porter shocked the world by appearing on the Oscars red carpet in a long velvet dress; the episode “changed everything, not just for me, but for the whole world,” as he would later state.
A historic moment that paved the way for other scenes of its kind. Like Brad Pitt on the red carpet of the Berlin Film Festival on the occasion of the premiere of the film Bullet Train, in July 2022, when the sex symbol imagined jacket and skirt set.
