Bronny James was so highly touted that his father, LeBron James, once revealed that colleges like Duke and Kentucky sent his son their affection when he was just 10 years old.
Elder James said in a 2015 interview that he was frustrated when his son was targeted for early admission to college while he was still in middle school.
LeBron James said in an interview with CBS:
“He’s got offers from some colleges.” It’s crazy. It should be illegal. You shouldn’t recruit 10-year-olds. “
Two days later, he reiterated his decision not to recruit his son so early in an interview with ESPN’s Myron Medcalf, saying:
“Let him be a child.”
Medcalf’s report, titled “Stop Recruiting LeBron Jr.,” addressed an NCAA rule in which “members of a coaching staff may observe individuals who are not entering seventh grade participating in sports-related activities if such observation occurs. During a period that allows for the evaluation of prospective student-athletes.”
Bronny James was just entering his fifth year when some coaches watched him primarily for early scouting purposes. At the time, Kentucky head coach John Calipari was one of the high-profile coaches who watched Bronny James play.
Ohio State head coach Thad Matta also revealed that he is already paying attention to James, and the school reportedly sent him a questionnaire in hopes of keeping him in his hometown.
Fast forward to now, and Bronny James ultimately chose USC so he could still be close to his father, who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers.
LeBron James’ son Bronny still awaiting full clearance to practice
As of Tuesday, Bronny James had not yet been cleared to join USC’s workouts.
Still, Trojans head coach Andy Enfield assured that LeBron James’ son is “doing very well” after suffering a cardiac arrest that shocked the basketball world. However, Enfield did not give an exact timetable for when Bronny James will make his highly anticipated college basketball debut.
Hopefully, James will be back to normal soon and able to return to training.
