Charli XCX has released her single with Sam Smith, “In the City.” This theme takes the lead of the two British pop superstars in a joint song and sets it in service of a completely disco and retro beat incorporating influences from EDM, techno and piano house… as reflected in the song “We Found Love” by Rihanna and Calvin Harris. ?
“On the Town” celebrates partying and friendship. According to Charlie, On the Town is about “meeting and connecting with the people you love through safe nights out and celebrations in magical places.” The theme also focuses on “feelings of acceptance, the wonder of feeling welcome in queer spaces, and the incredible people you know in those spaces.”
On the Town is a collaboration between Charlie and Smith based on the “hateful comments” he received online.
“In the City” is Charli’s first single since the artist released the Barbie soundtrack-themed “Speed Drive” late last month. This time, “Speed Drive” gave Charlie unexpected chart success: “Speed Drive” not only reached number 9 in the UK charts, but also climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, at number 73.
Crash, Charlie’s latest album, is one of the best of 2022. At the moment it is a “hits exhibition”, within which, as a rule, “In the City” takes place.
