Huawei Technologies Co. and China Mobile have built a 3,000-kilometre-long internet network linking Beijing to the south, which is touted as the country’s latest technological breakthrough.
The two companies collaborated with Tsinghua University and research provider Cernet.com to create the world’s first Internet with a bandwidth of 1.2 terabytes per second. The university’s statement said that the experiments began on July 31, and have been subjected to various tests since then.
150 movies per second
At this speed, the network can transmit 150 4K movies in less than a second. The network “is operated on the basis of key technologies that China possesses domestically,” Xinhua News Agency said in a report on Tsinghua’s website.
Tsinghua is basing the entire project on domestic technology, which is the first of its kind in the industry, and gives an important position to Huawei in its statement. The Chinese company caused a sensation when it launched its 5G smartphone with an advanced processor produced in China in August.
In February, Huawei’s global rival, Nokia, announced that it had reached 1.2 terabits per second over a distance of approximately 118 kilometers on an optical network in Europe. Currently, most countries’ networks operate at 100 gigabits per second. On the other hand, the United States increased its network to 400 Gbps using Internet2.
