Cristiano Ronaldo helps forgotten Scottish singer reach number one in Saudi charts with 2007 song

Scottish singer Amy Macdonald’s 2007 single has topped the Spotify charts in Saudi Arabia…thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 38-year-old Ronaldo is the most followed person on social media in the world, and his influence has further expanded since joining the Saudi Professional League last year.

Highlights from every game he plays for Al-Nassr have gone viral on TikTok, and his latest game has had unintended consequences.

A video set to Scottish singer Macdonald’s hit song “This is the Life” has given the song a huge resurgence in popularity.

The song originally peaked at number 28 on the UK Singles Chart in 2007, and even reached number one in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway.

Now, sixteen years later, it has reached the Middle East.

The 36-year-old discussed the phenomenon on the Restless Natives podcast.

She said: “I started noticing a lot of Arabic comments on social media.

“I was like, ‘It looks cute, but I don’t know what it says,’ and there was more and more content like that.

“Someone looked into this and there seemed to be a lot of videos on social media using ‘This is life’, like Ronaldo playing football in Saudi Arabia.

“I told a friend of mine about it and they sent me a Photoshopped picture of Jordan Henderson wearing an Amy McDonough T-shirt.”

“This is the Life” has been played more than 380 million times on Spotify.

The world of football is nothing new to McDonald, who is married to former Rangers defender Richard Forster.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, has provided plenty of highlight-worthy moments this season.

He scored 14 goals and provided seven assists in 13 games.

The Portuguese star helped Al-Nasr to beat Qatari side Duhail in the Asian Champions League yesterday to achieve a double.

Sadio Mane and Talisca are also on the score sheet.

Duhail is coached by former Paris Saint-Germain boss Galtier and owner Philippe Coutinho.
