“Chazelle is undoubtedly a genius of our time, destined to leave an indelible mark on the history of cinema, and it is a true privilege for this institution to host him in such a memorable setting as The Mole.“, explains Enzo Guigo, President of the National Cinema Museum.
The American director received the Special Jury Prize at the 2009 Turin Film Festival for his debut film A Boy and Madeline on a Park Bench. The film, comments Domenico De Gaetano, director of the museum, “showcased his precocious talent and visionary approach to storytelling, exploring innovative narratives and taking viewers on a moving and engaging journey. His films manage to tap into the emotional and psychological impact that ambition can cause.”
In 2014, the second film “Whiplash“, confirms his talent and brings an Oscar to actor J. K. Simmons: but it was with the third, acclaimed musical “La la Land” with Emma Stone as an aspiring actress and Ryan Gosling in an ambitious jazz musician whose success is becoming international, including 14 Oscar nominations.
Again with Gosling in 2018, he switched genres and told the story of the moon landing in “First man” before returning to his love of great cinema with “Babel”, his latest work starring Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt.which will be shown again at the Massimo cinema with an introduction by the author at the end of the master class at 20.30.
In the film, he talks about the epoch-making transition from the era of silent films to the era of sound films. “His love for the golden age of Hollywood is evident in the stunning excellence of his films: the same love for classic narrative cinema and contemporary world cinema that we want to celebrate at our museum, passing it on to the public and visitors,” adds Guigo. .
Chazelle has just returned from his experience as chairman of the jury at the Venice Film Festival, where he also awarded Italian Matteo Garrone the Silver Lion. The Stella della Mole Prize was presented to him by “P.for bringing a unique perspective to his projects, infusing them with the passion, creativity and uncompromising commitment necessary to realize his artistic vision.“
